Real-Time GPS Tracker

What it is

A self-contained GPS unit in a weatherproof magnetic housing. It reports its position to a web panel in real time, accurate to within a few metres, and stores a history so you can review where the asset has been rather than only where it is now.

There is no installation. It attaches to a steel surface and runs on its own battery.

What people use it for

• Vehicles you own. Company cars, trucks, plant and trailers, so you know where your fleet is and can prove it.
• Theft recovery. Motorcycles, caravans, boats, machinery and trailers are all commonly fitted with a tracker before they are stolen rather than after.
• Assets on hire. Equipment you own that is out with a customer or a subcontractor.
• Family members who have agreed to it. A tracker in a young driver’s car, or with an older relative who wants one, where that person knows and has agreed.

The law in New South Wales

This is the part most suppliers leave out, so here it is plainly.

Under section 9 of the Surveillance Devices Act 2007 (NSW) it is an offence to knowingly install, use or maintain a tracking device to determine the location of a person or a vehicle without the express or implied consent of that person, or of the owner of the vehicle.

The practical test is ownership and consent, not intention. It does not matter that you believe you have a good reason, that the car is jointly used, or that you are married to the person driving it. If the vehicle is not yours and the person has not agreed, fitting a tracker to it is a criminal offence, and the penalties are significant.

What you must not use it for

Do not fit this device to a partner’s, ex-partner’s or any other person’s vehicle. We will not supply it for that purpose, and if that is your situation this is the wrong product for you.

That is not us being cautious for its own sake. Evidence gathered unlawfully is generally useless to you: it will not assist you in a family law matter, it can expose you to prosecution, and it can badly damage your position in the proceedings you were hoping to strengthen.

If what you actually need is to know where someone is going

That is a real and common problem, and there is a lawful way to answer it. A licensed investigator can conduct surveillance from public places and produce time-stamped video and a written report that a court will accept. It costs more than a tracker and it is the option that actually works.

If the person cannot be found at all, locating a person is the service you want.
